Ride On Roller Training
Ride on rollers fall into the category of compaction equipment and, in the construction sector, usually consist of a ride-on machine fitted with an articulated chassis equipped with smooth drum rollers. Types used for earthworks activities can consist of a forward-mounted drum and pneumatic tyres to the rear which have the ability to work oninclines and rough terrain and can be fitted with a sheepsfoot drum.
Most Ride-on-Rollers have articulated steering, the front and the rear of the Roller are joined in the middle by a kingpin. A hydraulic ram or rams activated by turning the steering wheel turns the dumper. The engine supplies the hydraulic oil to the ram by pump, if the engine is switched off the steering becomes very stiff. The kingpin also allows the Roller to oscillate this helps maintain traction be allowing the drums to remain on the ground when travelling on rough terrain.
Articulated steering can be awkward in tight areas or if tight to structures because of its design. When you turn the steering wheel the front and the back go one way and the middle goes the opposite way this could cause you to hit obstacles close by. If tight to an obstacle then you must not over steer or you will hit it.
Another danger is the crush zone formed between the two haves when you apply a full lock, never allow anyone to stand on the step or between the two half’s of the Roller when the engine is running.
