Abrasive Wheel Training

Abrasive Wheel Npors N301

NPORS ABRASIVE WHEEL N301

Abrasive wheels are widely used across construction, engineering, maintenance, and manufacturing environments for cutting, grinding, and finishing a variety of materials, including metal, stone, concrete, masonry, and hardwood. Rather than being standalone tools, abrasive wheels are fitted to powered equipment such as:
  • Angle grinders
  • Bench and pedestal grinders
  • Petrol cut-off saws (chop saws)
  • Table and masonry saws
The abrasive surface may consist of super-abrasives such as diamond or cubic boron nitride (CBN), or conventional materials including aluminium oxide, silicon carbide, or ceramic grains. Regardless of type, abrasive wheels provide a robust cutting or grinding surface capable of producing accurate cuts, shaping, smoothing, and finishing on hard materials. These products are marketed under a variety of names, including cut-off wheels, grinding discs, diamond blades, cone wheels, cylinder wheels, tapered wheels, and straight-sided wheels. The NPORS Abrasive Wheels Awareness (N301) course delivered by Wise Training Hub Ltd provides essential knowledge and practical guidance for the safe selection, mounting, use, and maintenance of abrasive wheel equipment. The programme is designed to promote safe working practices, reduce risk of injury, and ensure compliance with current legislation and industry standards.

Course Outline

This course combines classroom-based theory with practical instruction. Delegates will study manufacturer guidance, relevant regulations, and best-practice safety procedures while developing the skills required to operate abrasive wheel equipment correctly.Hands-on activities enable participants to identify machine components, understand their functions, and apply safe operating techniques in realistic working scenarios.Training delivered by Wise Training Hub Ltd aligns with national standards, current health and safety legislation, and NPORS requirements. Instruction is provided by experienced trainers with strong occupational and technical backgrounds. The course concludes with:
  • A practical observation/assessment
  • A short-answer theory test
Successful candidates will qualify for the National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS) Operator Card.

Course Programme

This training is essential for anyone required to use abrasive wheel power tools safely as part of their duties. Delegates will gain knowledge of legal responsibilities, risk control measures, operational procedures, and equipment types.Course content includes:
  • Identifying machine components, controls, and their functions
  • Understanding hazards associated with abrasive wheels
  • Conducting pre-use inspections in accordance with manufacturer instructions and legal requirements
  • Selecting, inspecting, and correctly using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Choosing the correct wheel type and machine for specific applications
  • Safe mounting, adjustment, and dressing of wheels where applicable
  • Establishing safe working areas and exclusion zones
  • Operating equipment safely and efficiently
  • Awareness of dust, noise, vibration, and environmental considerations
  • Emergency procedures and dealing with defects or damage
  • Safe storage, handling, and transportation of abrasive wheels and equipment

On Completion

By the end of the course, successful delegates will be able to:
  • Identify equipment components and controls with confidence
  • Carry out pre-operational and safety checks
  • Select the appropriate wheel and PPE for the task
  • Operate abrasive wheel equipment safely and efficiently in line with NPORS guidance
  • Maintain safe working practices and awareness of surrounding hazards
  • Shut down equipment correctly and complete end-of-task procedures
  • Store and transport equipment safely
Upon successful completion, delegates will receive the NPORS Operator Card for Abrasive Wheels Awareness (N301), typically valid for three to five years depending on industry sector or employer requirements.

Who Should Attend?

This course is intended for plant operators, tradespeople, maintenance personnel, and workers who use or work near abrasive wheel equipment and require both theoretical knowledge and practical assessment to perform their duties safely.
