Wood Chipper & Shredder

The NPORS Wood Chipper / Shredder (N603) course is a specialist training programme designed for operators who are required to safely and efficiently use wood chippers and shredders in forestry, arboriculture, landscaping, agriculture, and grounds maintenance. These machines are typically powered by an agricultural tractor via the Power Take-Off (PTO) or are self-contained units, and they are used to process branches, brush, timber offcuts, and other woody materials into chips or mulch. This course provides delegates with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills to prepare and operate the agricultural tractor, attach and set trailers, ensure mounted and PTO drives are ready for safe operation, and correctly operate the wood chipper or shredder. In addition, it develops an understanding of safe loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation, ensuring equipment is handled responsibly on and off site.

This Theory & Practical Course Covers

The training programme provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate a chipper and carry out tasks on site.

Industry Knowledge

Learners gain a basic understanding of the industry, including the dangers associated with working in the sector and the responsibilities of a plant operator.

Machine Knowledge

Students learn how to use the manufacturer’s handbook for the machine being operated. Training includes identifying major machine components and understanding their functions, along with recognising steering, driving and braking controls.

Pre-Operational Checks

Training covers all required pre-operational checks in line with manufacturer recommendations and legislative requirements. Learners are also taught how to carry out running checks and identify any issues before operating the machine.

Personal Protective Equipment

Students learn how to identify and correctly maintain the personal protective equipment (PPE) required for safe chipper operation.

Safe Machine Operation

Learners are trained to safely mount and dismount the machine, carry out safety checks in the working area and manoeuvre the machine correctly into position before starting work.

Operational Tasks

The course covers practical chipper tasks including receiving materials from transporting vehicles and safely carrying out operational duties on site.

Machine Transport Procedures

Learners demonstrate knowledge of safe loading, unloading and towing procedures required when transporting machinery.

Environmental Considerations

Training includes understanding environmental responsibilities and how to minimise the impact of machine operations on the surrounding area.

End of Shift Procedures

Students learn how to carry out correct end-of-shift checks and machine shutdown procedures to ensure equipment is left in a safe and secure condition.
